Reflections for Detective Marcellus Ward

Man, I vividly recall the day Detective Ward was buried. The lines of police cars stretched on Caroline Street from the church to North Avenue. As fate would have it, years later, I would be inspired by Detective Ward's courage and dedication to follow my dream and become a law enforcement officer. May you continue to rest in peace Detective Ward and thanks for your service.

Without question, Uncle Marty was the guy I wanted to be like, my role model. It is hard to believe that he was taken away from us 28 years ago. I just finished reading all of the reflections on this page and each of them accurately depict the type of man he was. He had a positive impact on so many lives and I was blessed to have him in my life. I can safely state that the person I am today is because of him.
You are truly missed but I know that you are watching over and protecting us. Rest in peace…

I've read this page I dont know how many times. A recent opportunity to honor you is being bestowed still today. We are so proud to be a part of it. A very dear friend, a retired US Army CID Special Agent, and my son will run the upcoming LEO Memorial 5K (DC) in your name. What a small tribute to someone who gave so much.

I first came into contact with you Marty when teaching undercover operations. I timidly use the phrase "came into contact" since many years had already passed your ultimate sacrifice. We used the audio and pictoral images of your heroism to reinforce so many concepts used today. For you see Marty, you not only TCO'd (Took care of each other) your fellow officers, you went on to enlighten the minds of literally thousands of LEO's around the world. Your heroism, dedication, and professionalism are alive today. You altered mindsets. You changed lives. You SAVED so many more brother...

As I write this, I canot help but hear and feel the emotion each time we shared your voice, your strength, your will.

You are a hero in the truest sense.

God Bless you Marty.

God Bless your Family.

I was searching the newspaper and I came across the article, and I remember that day that Mr. Marty was taken from us. I remember how nice he and his wife Ms. Sandy were. I am so happy to have met such a wonderful family. I pray for continuous encouragement for the family.

I have never met someone as nice and genuine as this man. Although, I was only 12 years old when this occurred.. it still hits home to this day. I will continue to pray for those officers who fight each and everyday to make our city safe as Mr. Ward did.

I will always remember Mr. Marty, Mrs. Sandy, and Lil Marty and Reggie. We grew up in the same neighborhood, and all the kids looked up to Mr. Marty. He would give the best cookouts and we always felt welcomed! It's been 25 years and I still remember what kind of husband, father, and example to the young black men in our neighborhood he was. What a terrible lost. God bless your family. Always in my prayers...Sandee

To the Ward family: I didn't know Detective Ward, but heard so many nice things about him. Though he gave the ultimate sacrifice, God has him in heaven. His killer, well his place is in hell, if he hasn't already gone there. Such a senseless crime. But thank you for trying to keep the streets safe for the citizens. Guess what, it's worst now. I believe you would not want to come back. You are one of God's angels. Enjoy your new residence. God has watched over your family and friends. God bless you all.

Every year I leave a reflection on this website and today marks the 25th anniversary of my uncle's death. The memorial service that is being held today is a great tribute to Marcellus Ward, the Detective- THE MAN ! My uncle died with great intergrity and honor. He died for something that he believed in. Words can not describe my feelings of pride and the strengthening comfort that I feel knowing that uncle is watching over us. May God Bless those who took time to reflect and honor the life of Detective Marcellus Ward and his outstanding work.

I remember the incident as if it were yesterday.
I had the pleasure of working with your son Marty
for several years, who spoke of you often.
God bless the Ward family and friends.

That haunting, plaintive cry from his partner...25 years ago, who can forget? And the tributes from people who loved him and knew him and worked with him are all correct, reminding all of Detective Ward's giving time on this earth. But please don't forget, I believe Marty was also a USMC veteran of Vietnam. If I am correct on that last one, Welcome Home Marty.

I was surfing the net today and was looking up events in Maryland and thought about Detective Ward and hunted until I found this site. I was a young married woman 25 years ago with a young son yet I remember so clearly the tapes of the night Detective Ward was killed and his partner's cries as he heard what was happening. His sacrifice for the city of Baltimore will never be forgotten. I am sure his family remembers him well and I am glad this site provides a place for people to leave their comments and reflections.

Wow, 25 years but yet it just seems like yesterday. I talk to Marty's Sister Pam and she told me about this wonderful site about Marty. I will never forget that day and how heart broken we all were about his life being taken away from him and his family. He was a good Husband, Father and a good friend to all.

Marty continues to be missed by us all. I have so many good memories about Marty, Sandy, Little Marty and Reggie and how my family and his family spent so much time together doing good things and enjoying life. We miss you, we love you and we will never forget you.

My Dad was Baltimore City Police Officer before I was born and on many occasions he has told me stories from when he was a cop. He was working with Detective Ward on the drug bust. He was called in to work in the van with the recording equipment and, talking to Detective Ward from the beginning of the bust to the time he was shot, he remembers that night very vividly. From what I was told, Detective Ward was a great guy and will be missed greatly.
