ALTHOUGH I DON'T KNOW YOU AT A PERSONAL LEVEL OFFICER DON EUGENE BACON I GREATLY APPRECIATE THE SACRIFICE THAT YOU MADE TO PROTECT OTHERS. KNOWING THAT YOU WERE KILLED BY A DRUNK DRIVER REALLY HITS ME AT A CLOSE LEVEL BECAUSE I HAVE BEEN IN TWO ACCIDENTS IN WHICH A DRUNK DRIVER CRASHED INTO MY FATHER AND ME . LUCKILY MY FATHER AND I SURVIVED BOTH OF THESE ACCIDENTS AND KNOWING THAT OFFICER BACON WAS KILLED BY THIS MAKES ME VERY UPSET TO HEAR ABOUT SOMETHING LIKE THIS. ALSO KNOWING THAT OFFICER BACON WAS ONLY 21 AFFECTED ME GREATLY SINCE I'M ONLY 23 YEARS OLD AND WE WEREN'T VERY DIFFERENT IN OUR AGES. KNOWING THAT YOUR LIFE COULD END IN A MATTER OF SECONDS NO MATTER HOW OLD OR YOUNG YOU ARE IS A VERY BIG EYE OPENER FOR ME.
AS A RECRUIT GOING THROUGH THE LA COUNTY SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT ACADEMY I WAS LOOKING AT THE LA COUNTY MEMORIAL WALL ON OUR GRINDER AND I WAS ABLE TO SEE OFFICER BACON'S NAME VERY EASILY FROM WHERE I WAS STANDING. SEEING HIS NAME ON THERE MADE MY HEART FEEL HEAVY BECAUSE THIS WAS A MAN THAT WAS WILLING TO DO WHATEVER IT TOOK TO PROTECT AND SERVE THE PEOPLE OF THIS COUNTY. HE SADLY HAD TO MAKE THE ULTIMATE SACRIFICE. SEEING HIS NAME I KNEW I HAD TO SEARCH UP HIS NAME AND FIND OUT MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THIS HERO. I WOULD LIKE TO THANK HIM FOR EVERYTHING THAT HE HAS DONE AND AM DEEPLY SORRY FOR HIS FAMILY AND FRIENDS WHO SUDDENLY LOST HIM ALL BECAUSE OF A DRUNK DRIVER.

I didn't know Officer Bacon but I knew about his sacrifice. I went through a full police academy in 1973 and worked for the City of Gardena as a reserve police officer to start my career in Law Enforcement. In my 20+ years I have heard of way to many GREAT Law Enforcement officers given the utmost sacrifice. Even through I haven't been back to GPD in years I do consider every one in that GREAT Dept. my BROTHERS & SISTERS. I'm now 62 years old and still hurt when I hear of an officer down. Officer Bacon paved the way for people like myself and for that I will always remember his sacrifice. God Bless all our men & women in law enforcement.

Don was my dear brother and best friend. Drunks who drink and drive, have no idea what they steal from the family and friends of the ones they kill. I miss him to this day. We all suffer the loss of this fine young man.
The world would have better place with him in it!

It is an honor to be related to this man, taken way too soon....I know how he touched the family, and how the tragedy of his passing has affected everybody....I wasn't even born then, but I think of him often....Gardena has a nice picture on their website. Take care, all.... Mike (Helen's grandson, Hazel's (Don's Mom) great nephew.....)

With sincere sympathy to the family and friends of Police Officer Don Eugene Bacon. I did not know Officer Bacon, but am a very good friend of his cousin Jackie.

This past, May 2003 my husband and I attended the National Police Memorial Service in Washington, D.C. It was an honor for us to pay tribute and respect to Officer Bacon as we searched his name on the National Wall.

This is a note from my cousin, to me.. I was named after my Uncle.

Dawn,

You are welcome, honey. I'm so glad I decided to forward that to your mother. Your dear uncle was so handsome and he passed away when I was only 15. His was the first wedding at the age of (14) I had ever attended........and, his was the first funeral I had ever attended. I'll never forget the EXTREME SADNESS it left in my heart and mind. I used to take my favorite roses to Donny when I lived up in Hawthorne.

Take care, I hope you are well

Love,
cousin, Jackie
