Reflections for Police Officer Frederick W. Walsh, Jr.
Sorry for your loss Melissa Rhone. That was a terrible night.
The first seat belts on ever saw where in my father’s Long Beach Police Patrol Car not long after the department installed them.
Peace be with you always.

Officer Walsh,
My dad was your partner that night. He had put on the newly installed seat belt and survived the crash. When the sergeant came to take us to St. Mary's the next morning I did not understand what had happened except Daddy was hurt (I was 4 and was well cared for by St. Mary's nuns). My dad came home, but your children lost you. Dad is gone now too, but I never forget.

Dear Willie
I honor your memory and will never forget you and what you accomplished (both personally and professionally). I am truly sorry that we could not have met. However, you have touched my life in a wonderful way without even having planned or known it.
Sincerely,
Your Neighbor Dawn

Well said, M. Rhone and Christine Walsh Wells! My late father, also a Long Beach Police Officer at that time, knew both of your fathers.
And, even though I, too, was young at the time (four months short of my fourth birthday), I can remember fearing that the unforeseen knock on the front door could happen to me, too.
And like you, Christine Walsh Wells, my father also used to take me to the LB PD pistol range, the old one that was located on Wardlow and Los Coyotes, only blocks from where we lived.
When I tell people that I shot my father’s service revolver at that range in or about January 1957 when I was not yet four, they can’t fathom it. But, I did.
So, your comment about being with your father at the range when you were probably not much older than me has brought a smile to my face.
Thank you, and peace be with you always.

My father was your partner that day, and survived the crash. I was 5. I vividly remember the sergeant coming to the door with Dad's gunbelt, and taking my mother and I to St. Mary's hospital. I was well cared for by the nuns, as my mom went to see my dad. Your family was cared for too, but you didn't come home.
May no child of a first responder have to answer the door to this grief. It lives in your heart forever.

Dad I was young when I lost you but I do remember you so much. The days at the pistol range, pretendeing I was taking a nap so I could go with you. It took me some years to figure ought why you and Mom wewe laughing. When I drove through the garage, Mom was mad at you for that ! Now that you and Mom are together again I know she is finally happy. You were truly the love of her life. I still to this day miss you so very much, I still cry and wonder how different our lives would have been. For some reason your family abandoned us and I am sure I will never know why but as they say that that doesn't kill you makes you stronger. I miss you still so much.
With all my Love Forever and always, until we are together again, Chrissy YOU ARE MY HERO
