Reflections for Police Officer Larry J. Vincent

We were in the same class at the academy. I believe that he was the 1st officer that we lost. He was a dedicated officer and well respected.

Officer Vincent I met your sons tonight at the Candlelight Vigil. I know your proud and have been watching over your family like my father, Officer Kenneth Kaner, has been doing since June 19, 1970. I've read their posts and they have all those same unanswered questions looming. Just like myself. When there's a violent end there's a huge void created. Our world taught us at a young age that Superman can be killed. It's been a tuff journey, but meeting people like your sons always makes me aware that there is a society of us out there. That gives me hope and purpose.

I, like your sons have started a family. For the longest time I couldn't bare to have children. Fear. I feared losing or untimely leaving a child like my father left me. I left it in God's hands and now have a four year old son. I find myself hoping for time to fly by so my son will know me longer then I knew my father. It is the cross we bare. It's always a battle, but that is life. Having met your sons will give me strength. Thank You. I know my father is with you. Watch over all of us. Will meet some day.
God Bless you, your family and your son that followed in your foot steps.

I didn't know Officer Vincent, but a friend of mine was kind enough to share a little about your family with me, which touched my heart deeply. I hope it is alright that I briefly comment here.
I am very sorry for your enormous loss. There are no words that can do justice, and no amount of time that could possibly erase the memory or amazing legacy that your beloved has left behind.
In reading the reflections here, and the heartfelt Eulogy from the 30 Year Memorial, I was so touched at how your family has honored his life, his brave service and sacrifice, with such incredible strength and faith, just as he had. I can only imagine how very proud he must be.
What a testament of love. May God Bless each of you, as you carry on Larry's legacy, by living your lives to the fullest~ just as he would want you to.
Last nights candlelight vigil brought tears to my eyes~ for you~ and each of the families of the 567 CPD officers who were killed in the line of duty.

old neighbor and pest across this story. I hadn't thought of your family in years but now the memories have come back clearly. I was 7 years old when my mom was called across the street to take care of Jason and Tony and keep them away from the news coverage on TV. I remember being mad I couldn't go with and remember my own dad hugging me a little tighter that night. I didn't yet know what happened but knew it was bad. More importantly, though, I remember you. I remember adoring you as a little girl because you were always so kind and friendly. I specifically remember a time all the boys on the block were in the pool swimming. When you saw how sadly I was watching them, you let me crash the boys only party. I remember not caring how annoyed all the boys were and only being excited you invited me. Silly little memory, I know, but you must have really made an impression on me. Thank you for your kindness...I'm very glad to hear your family is well!

DEAR VINCENT FAMILY,
THE LOSS OF A FATHER IS A VERY HARD THING HAVE TO GO THROUGH AS YOU KNOW. I GREW UP IN A FAMILY THAT SUFFERED THE SAME. YOU SEE MY MOM WAS MARRIED TWICE AND HER FIRST HUSBAND WAS KILLED ON THE JOB IN 1968. HIS NAME WAS JOHN TUCKER AND HE WORKED IN THE 004TH DISTRICT. HE LEFT BEHIND 3 CHILDREN. I CAME ALONG WHEN MY MOM RE-MARRIED TO MY FATHER IN 1970.
I HAVE SEEN FIRST HAND THE PAIN AND LOSS THESE PIECES OF GARBAGE HAVE CREATED AND LOST A BROTHER
BECAUSE OF ONE.YOU SEE, IN THIS LIFE, WHEN DANGER SHOWS ITS UGLY HEAD,SOME GUYS RUN AND SOME GUYS STAY AND FIGHT! YOUR FATHER STAYED AND THAT IS DEFINITION OF HERO! I KNOW THERE ARE NO COMFORTING WORDS TO TRULY DEAL WTH THE LOSS OF A FATHER/HUSBAND/BROTHER BUT ALL I CAN SAY IS IF YOU HAVE FAMILY AND FRIENDS IT CAN GET YOU THROUGH ANYTHING! RAISE A TOAST TO YOUR FATHER AND NEVER LET A HERO BE FORGOTTEN! GOD BLESS THE VINCENT FAMILY AND IF YOU SHOULD EVER NEED ANYTHING PLEASE FEEL FREE TO CONTACT ME IN 012TH DISTRICT.

Eulogy at 30 Year Memorial by Jason Paul Vincent:

"Because you are a cherished son, a faithful brother, a loving husband. Because you are a father - my Father. Because you were the best of us. Because we love you and because we miss you. That is why we are here tonight.

We are here for you, dad. We are here to honor your sacrifice and to memorialize the life you lived.

30 years ago this evening, Larry Vincent gave his life protecting the City of Chicago. A month earlier he had turned 29. I was 8. He was a husband to a beautiful wife and loving mother, Marilyn, a father to two sons and expecting to see the birth of his third child nearly six months later.

I am his oldest son Jason.

My father was a third generation Chicago police officer. Anyone in his life knew he took great pride in being a police officer. He was called to this work and he was passionate about it. Nothing would stop him from making this his life’s work.

I am so proud to tell you that it showed. In his nearly 3-year career, he was awarded 12 commendations for excellence in police work. Many of you have shared your deep respect and admiration for my father. Hearing your stories and thoughtful views warm our hearts. The comfort they bring us is truly revealed in my brother Tony’s reading from the Book of Wisdom, it reads,

“Having become perfect in a short while, he reached the fullness of a long career; for his soul was pleasing to the Lord, therefore he sped him out of the midst of the wickedness.”

The word of the Lord comforts us, yet, your words, those of his family, friends and fellow officers; your stories help us welcome him back to our lives. Your words bring him rushing back into our life. We are grateful.

More comforting yet is the fact that his excellence as a police officer was exceeded only by his brilliance as a father, husband and family man. Larry Vincent loved with no abandon. His smile brightened rooms. His love showed us all how to be better brothers, sons, partners and human beings.

I remember him vividly. I remember his love. He was warm, fun. I remember building an igloo with him in our backyard after a heavy snowfall and him teaching me to tie my shoes. I am blessed to have known him as a father and role model. He was everything God and our society expects a father to be. Again, in this, he achieved perfection.

It is no surprise then that his sacrifice would further reveal his character as a man and his faith as a believer. We listened as my brother Don read Paul’s letter to the Romans,

“None of us lives for oneself, and no one dies for oneself.”

Selfless love. It is an imperative for any believer and in this my father also achieved perfection.

There is no doubt that we have endured a great tragedy but our story is not one of despair but one of strength through family, faith and friends.

We have heard the prayers of the faithful remembering our loved one for his sacrifice; endured together the sorrow of our shared loss.

We even know what it is liked to be cared for by those we have never even met. This experience, too has its blessings.

His ultimate sacrifice would shape our lives in even more wonderful ways. It gave us two beautiful sisters. His sacrifice proved that there was another good man in this world ready to raise 3 boys as his own.

What shined brighter for us though is the love of a wonderful mom, our aunts and uncles, grand parents and siblings, friends and neighbors. We have known the love of a caring and committed extended family. We have known the love of community more than most.

One of the blessings of your sacrifice – of our sacrifice.

Only time and healing would reveal that my father’s sacrifice took more from him than any of us. So, if we must mourn tonight, we mourn for Larry because it is he whose sacrifice meant he would miss the birth of a son and a grandson, a soon to be born grand daughter, the love of a daughter in law, the love of his sisters Mary C and Dee Dee, his nieces and nephews, the golden years with his spouse and all of the other gifts the past 30 years have given to all of us.

We are here tonight, not to mourn but to remember a great man. While remembering my dad may still bring a tear to our eye, now we smile more when he crosses our mind or reveals himself in a passing moment. So, tonight, share your stories so we may pass them along to the next generation of his legacy.

In closing, please know your presence this evening has given his family an incredible gift – a celebration and remembrance of a man we all loved.

This is a joyous occasion for us to recognize the greatness of someone we love and miss deeply.

Thank you for keeping my father alive in your memories and stories. Thank you for honoring him with your presence.

Thank you all for making sure my father is indeed NEVER FORGOTTEN.

God Bless Larry Vincent. We love you."

I'm sorry that I will not be able to attend Larry's memorial service. I live in Marietta Ga. I was Larry's FTO. I always told him that he was going to be superintendent of police, because he was such a good police officer. My prayers go out to his wife and childern. Also his dad Don. His dad was working in area 2 when I was a teenager, working at the neighborhood drugstore, and is one of the reasons that I joined the dept.

Nearly 30 years after your death I asked the Chicago Police Department for the records from the evening you died because I want to know the details and will need to share them with my family some day. I want to make sure I get it correct.

Last night I began to read through the incident reports from the evening of your death. Not as easy as I thought. I miss you.d
