Ninety plus years after the incident, Officer Vellines, the grandfather I never knew, remains present in the hearts and minds of his family. My mother, who was five years old at the time of her father's death, still lives in the area and visits his grave seasonally.

My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.
