My father was a resident of Wenona during the time that Mr. Axline was murdered. He told me the story of the incident back in 1967. He also talked about what a fine man Mr. Axline was that that he was highly regarded by the community. The only addition to the story was that near the date of his murder Mr. Axline celebrated his birthday and that his wife had bought him a bullet proof vest, which back in the day were extremely heavy. When Mr. Axline went on duty the day of his death he unfortunately decided not to wear the vest.

I beleive my father, Sheriff Howard Whittaker, and then deputy Axline, served Marshall co. together in 1925 or so. In 1920's a man by the name of Stemus had murdered sheriff Litchfield and marshal Leonard. Axline and Whittaker went to Evansville to transport the murder back to Lacon, but with hearing there was a lynching planed, the officers changed routes and took the prisoner to Peoria,Ill.,to be held for his trial.
This was before I was born, but have heard about it through my mother.
