Thank you Detective Rizzo. This man was my adopted step grandfather and had a great influence on my mother's viewpoint on life and values. Needless to say, I inherited those values from her. I served 20 years in the USAF, retiring as a captain, part of which was as a USAF Security Policeman.

Marsha Sanders, I am Jim Hoover whom you spoke of. At your leisure, please contact me.

Some of your other relatives live nearby me, there are not many of them left, but we could share about our reflections of the heroic Grandfather I never met and about Thomas's descendants.

My grandmother, Mae Theresa Torpy Dugo, told me stories of her beloved brother. Losing him was one of the great sadnesses of her life. She regretted too, that after his death, his wife and children moved and the family lost touch with them. It was heartwarming to read the story of Mr. James Hoover, his adopted grandson.
Thank you for remembering my cherished great uncle.

I served with Capt. Thomas E.Torpy USMC, and was in Okinawa when his helicopter crashed. I issued his flight gear prior to his flight. He was a true gentleman, humble, and was well liked by everyone. A great Marine. I still think of him to this day. GYSgt Ray Berry. Wish the Torpy Family the best.

It was an honor to read your name among the 567 heroes of the Chicago Police Department during last night's Candlelight Vigil at Gold Star Families and Memorial Park. Your service, and your family's sacrifice will never be forgotten.

Thank you kind people for the meaningful words about my adoptive Grandfather. He married my widowed Grandmother who had my mother with her when they did marry. I was born in 1946, so never met him, but know that he was indeed a man of integrity. My grandmother related that he had lost a promotion to Sergeant because he turned down bribes and arrested the perps. He had been a part of an arrest of Al Capone and personally knew the famous Untouchables. His son was my 1/2 uncle and was a man of integrity too. He served in the Auxiliary of the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department. He passed away in 2005. His son Thomas died in the service of his grateful nation in the USMC.

Patrolman Torpy (and family), I knew your son Tom and was best friends with his son, your grandson Thomas E. Torpy. Your son spoke highly of his father. Both of these men were genuine people and had the highest integrity, which must have reflected down from you. Rest in Peace sir.

Riverside County Sheriff's Department

It has been 77 years since you made the ultimate sacrifice but the CPD shall not forget. Your heroic actions shall not be forgotten. Sadly on the every same day you were struck down another Chicago police officer, Louis Furst, was shot and killed about two miles away. Thank you for your service.
