Glen
It’s hard to believe it’s been 40 years since you left this earth. I’ll never forget the first time I met you. My wife Shirley and I were picking up our 2 year old daughter from your mom who baby sat for us. I had been with SPD only a few years and you have expressed your desire to join the force. I like so many other officers went into shock hearing of your death. I was one of three officers outside Angola State Penitentiary when your cowardly killer got his justice. I still miss you brother. Thank you for your service and sacrifice

To fully appreciate the heroes of the present, we must recognize our heroes of the past. Your heroism and service is honored today, the 35th anniversary year of your death. I am privileged to leave a tribute to you. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service.

My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered. Rest In Peace

I don't know what me think of Glen's name today. But I searched and found this web page. I was a jailer working in the jail. My shift was just coming on and Glen was in the jail and drinking coffee on one of the seats. He had been a former jailer (before my time) and was well known by the other jailers. He got a call and was gone.

A little while later, all hell broke loose as we were called from the radio room that an office had been shot. We soon found out that it was Glen and that he was DOA to LSUMC.

Over the next few hours the news broke that the suspect had been shot by one of the patrol sergeants with a shotgun. Later, that same sergeant was telling the jail crew that he was about to shoot the suspect a second time when the lights from a tv crew lit up and stopped him from finishing the suspect off.

Time flies. So many days, weeks, months and years have passed since that night. But for Glen, his shift never ended. We all got go home, live our lives, and grow old. He never had that chance.

Glen, I still remember that Friday night that I heard of your death while working an off duty job. It was so long ago, but still seems like yesterday. I remember your mother baby sitting my oldest daughter and meeting you for the first time. It was with great satisfaction that I along with two more SPD officers stood outside the gates of Angola the night they executed your killer. I miss you and want you to know, you have not been forgotten. RIP my brother....

Glen and I were academy classmates and I was on duty the night of his death and I was present when his killer was shot and taken into custody. I've thought of Glen many times over the years and I know that he is still on duty but in a far better place. I miss you my friend.

The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

I just feel horrible about the officer's death. I am so sorry for his family. I know much about the man who killed him. It is a sad story all the way around. I am so sorry. I know this happened some time ago, but we should not forget these wonderful men and women.

That night will be marked in my memory forever. I had wanted that beat that night. They put me in District 7 instead. When they put out the call, I knew who it was and I came as fast as I could, but I had been down on a call in upper 6. When I arrived, you were already gone. I have re-played that night hundreds of times, thinkiing of ways that could have made a difference. But, the results always came out the same. You were my friend, and you were physically gone from us forever. But you will never be gone from us emotionally, as long as one of us are alive to remember.

The guilt will never go away, the pain will never leave my heart. You had just taken over my beat, you made a rookie mistake. It shouldn't have cost you your life.
I didn't attend your funeral, I felt it was my fault.
Rest in peace Glen, rest in peace.

It has been 28 years since your tour of duty ended and you have not been forgotten nor will that ever be the case. Continue to keep watch over your loved ones and those still out on patrol watching over the Thin Blue Line. You are a true hero and heroes never die. You will never be forgotten.

Yesterday (06-25-06), I buried my father, Bill Cheatwood. My dad was a retired SPD officer. As I reflected back on his career and the stories that he told, I think I remember him telling me the events of Officer Tomkins death. (I think I am correct when I say that my father was there that night)
I know that ya'll are having a grand reunion and talking up the old days. "It's not how they died that makes them heroes, it's how they lived"
