Reflections for Patrolman James Walter Todd
Revisiting your page, Uncle Jimmy. Today is December 12th and you have been gone for 68 years. All your siblings are now gone and yet we that are left behind remember them, as we remember you. We will: Always Remember; Never Forget!!!

Hello Uncle Jimmy (James Walter Todd),
This coming December 12, 2018 will be 68 years since you were taken from us. I still have old newspaper clippings from your short life here with us. The clippings include the death of your infant son, Lloyd Eugene Todd. Lloyd's obituary indicated he was survived by his parents Mr. and Mrs. James W. Todd of Port Wentworth, GA. It did not give his mother's first or maiden name. However, it indicated his maternal grandparents were Mr. and Mrs. Layton Nelson of Port Wentworth. Until today, I always thought your surviving son was named James Walter Todd Jr. The obituary has your surviving son listed as James Edward Todd. So, maybe your first born son, James was named after your father. I know you and your wife divorced before you died and arrangements were made for your surviving son to receive benefits. I wish there was a way to find little Jimmy. He may already be deceased. But, knowing about his life; knowing his mother's name, would be nice. You are not forgotten!
By the way, I did apply to join the Savannah Police Department when I was about 22 years old. I was not hired. The reason given by the department was they thought I was too young and would likely not "stick" with the job, if hired. So, at 22, I enlisted in the United States Air Force. Some years later, I was commissioned and retired after 37 years of service, as a Lt. Colonel. I served all over the country and in foreign lands, to include Baghdad, Iraq, before retiring from the DIA and the Joint Staff, Pentagon. The Savannah Police Department was wrong. I was a dedicated servant and would have given them my entire career! I am proud I had a father, uncles and even an aunt who served in the military with several staying until retirement. I am proud my sister, Virginia, also served in the Army. Three of her four children served in the Air Force. My older brother was a Marine and served in Vietnam. My twin brothers both joined the Army as well. I suppose we are and have always been a "service" family. You and your brothers served in foreign lands during WWII; in Europe and the Pacific. Your great grandfather, William Edward Todd, enlisted and died during the Civil War. Several of William's brothers also enlisted and survived the conflict. Thank you for your sacrifice. Here to follow through on a motto: Always Remember; Never Forget!!!

Hello Uncle Jimmy - it is me again, your niece, Sandra Carol Allen, USAF now retired and with time to look at old family documents. I have seen your death listed from 1949 to 1952. So, here in 2014 I would like to set the record straight based on a Certificate of Indemnity from Wilbert Burial Vault which indicates the vault is for your internment on 14 December 1950. That was the December before I was born. It will be 64 years this Dec 2014. I have seen records indicated you died leaving behind a wife and child. However, your VA records indicate a divorce 14 Oct 1950. And, records indicate that marriage occurred in Ridgeland SC on 1 April 1945. Other compensation records indicate a payment until your child comes of age on 23 Feb 1966. Therefore, I am believing your little boy was born 18 years prior to that date on 23 Feb 1948. All the cousins have heard about little Jimmy but we have never found him. We think about you and talk about you and we think about little Jimmy. Your parents and 10 siblings have joined you. Your sister June is 90 and sister Jean is 87. You sacrificed much the day you left. Thank you.

It has been almost 60 years since you left us. I am your brother's daughter and was a year old. You left behind a mother and father, nine sisters and three brothers. You had a wife and child, a boy I believe was also named James, called little Jimmy. I wish I knew how to find little Jimmy. I think he and his mother moved to New York. Your parents, seven sisters and three brothers have joined you on the other side. Sisters June and Jean keep your memory alive here. After 60 years many wonderful things are still said about your character. I have your photos too.
