I was helping to clean up the area several days after the flood. I was a student at American River JC at the time and several of us drove to Yuba City to help with the clean up. We came upon the site where the cruiser was deposited by the flood waters. The car was completely hidden from view by the silt from the river. As I remember, it was about 150 feet from the blacktop. The top appeared to have been cut open with an axe in an attempt to find the officers. We had heard that the Officers were found several hundred yards beyond this site, having drown while on duty.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 56th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered.

My name is Judith Talley-Pate, with my reflection of:
John Leroy Talley, youngest brother of my father. He was my uncle, who drowned while on duty during the 1955 Sutter CO. flood. I was only 15 years of age when I got the devastating news, while living in Oregon at the time.
He has soulfully been missed over the past fifty-two years. It is a pleasure to reflect on the memory of his short life. I am among the many who are blessed by the memory of his gracious smile and his kindness toward friends and loved ones. In my heart I know he is still smiling.

The rainy season is upon us, and I have been conducting Roll Call training related to swift water rescue. Your sacrifice will be included in my future classes.

No fellow California law enforcement personnel killed in the line-of-duty, should be forgotten.

Deputy Talley, may Your Soul Rest-In-Peace.

Deputy Talley, thanks for your service and sacrifice. I will ask the sheriff for your photo and tour of duty information to complete your memorial.

You and Undersheriff Blackburn have been memorialized with a park in Yuba City where many families play softball, and see your names. There is also a plaque in front of the courthouse, which has been there since the 50's. You are not forgotten.

Deputy Sheriff Glen Mercer
Sutter County Sheriff's Office

I leave a memorial in order to honor your sacrifice and to thank you for your service and protection to Sutter County. My father, mother and two oldest brothers fled their home in Yuba City at the time of the flood in 1955. My mother was pregnant at the time with my older brother. They loaded up their most precious possessions and the Christmas presents and were taken in by friends in Colusa County. You were on duty on Christmas Eve and lost your life keeping watch. Thank you for your efforts to safeguard the community where my family and so many friends lived. Thank you for your courage. Rest in peace.

Laurie
