Reflections for Sergeant Daniel J. Swift

Danny- I think of you often, with great respect. You were a very dear friend of mine during our high school years and college years, as well as your years with Hornells finest. You were a wonderful husband to Julie and a great father to Danny. You are missed with much saddness, but will never be forgotten. I am proud to have had you as such a dear friend. "thanks for the memories". Dobber

Officer Swift, I remember watching my father, also a Police Officer at the time with Alfred P.D., cry so hard when you were taken. What happened to you was senseless but what you tried to do was very heroic. I was a little guy then but have since grown up, a S.P. in the USAF for 9 years active duty and a Police Officer for 3 years. Your picture along with Trooper Ray Dodge still hangs proudly on the walls of HornelL P.D. That's where I got my start in law enforcement after leaving the military. I worked there for about 2 1/2 years before lateral transfering to Corning. Every memorial day I still go to the area cemetaries and make sure you and all the others lost have a new HPD memorial flag. I grew up with your son Danny, a great athlete and a good man. He would have made you proud. We recently lost another good young cop from Hornell, Trooper Larry Gleason, who I knew and went to school with. Another senseless, tragic death. Watch over us as we keep the beat. Take care of each other, you are all in a better place. RIP Mr. Swift, you are not forgotten.

It's been nearly 30 years... your actions on that day made a lasting impact on a young 10 year old... you were my first hero... today I think about how ridiculous the entire incident was... our city state, and country lost a good man...
