Night Marshal Swatta,

The way you perished is eerily similar to a call I responded to yesterday. I also heard what I thought were gun shots in an area nearby, where I was parked in my patrol car. Fortunately for me, it was only fireworks. I will remember your story & continue to be vigilant in my approach...as I could have approached better than I did.

You will always be remembered Sir. God Speed Brother!

My Grandfather, Marshal Tony Swatta, was the first peace officer killed in West Des Moines (formerly Valley Junction). I am very proud to be his granddaugher and will always remember and honor him. Although I never met him, I have read the newspaper clippings of that fateful night. A big thank you to all law enforcement people who keep us safe.
