Reflections for Policeman Albert Charles Steward

Grandfather: I have just retired as a Senior Investigator for the Massachusetts Attorney General. I have thought of your courage often as I worked with numerous municipal and State Police Officers. I pray often for their safety. I thank them for protecting me. I so wish I could have known you in life. But I have carry your spirit throughout my own days. Your grandson, Richard.

Morning and mourning
Wondering what might have been
Dealing with tales of larceny
You are still on the job
See you soon, Grandpa.

I am a STEWARD and all of the Steward Family knew that our Grandfather was a hero and so was our Grandmother. She was there for her seven children and her grandchildren.
They are together in a special place and watching over all of us

Again, this date, I reach out across the years and miles.
But now I find that in the life of the spirit,
There is no time or distance.

Today, I see you clearly.
I take your hand and we smile.

Officer Steward was my Grandfather and we never met .He was killed on duty when my Dad was only 13 but all his friends would tell my Father how much my brother looked like him.

My brother now has 10 great grand children and we want them to also Remember

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 85th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Your sacrifice was made so many years ago. Evil was, is, and will be a part of life just as goodness such as yours will also be present. I am sure that you are proud that your family has continued your legacy of protecting and serving.

Rest In Peace

You are a true hero Officer Steward. By far the bravest. It is officers like you that define the meaning of "the finest". God bless you and your family.

"Albert Steward was my grandfather. He died in the line of duty in a gunfight when my father, the youngest of seven, was five years old. I was told many times during my upbringing of his bravery and dedication to public service. I hope my own work in law enforcement and emergency services reflects well upon his spirit. I only wish I could have met him." ~~Richard Steward, Senior Investigator
Massachusetts Attorney General

I'm quite sure your grandfather would be very proud of you!

Godspeed Officer Steward

The Final Inspection

The policeman stood and faced God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining,
Just as brightly as his brass.

"Step forward now, policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To my church have you been true?"

The policeman squared his shoulders and said,
"No lord, I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry a badge
can't always be a saint."

I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.

But I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at time I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.

If you've a place for me here, Lord,
It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't I'll understand.

There was a silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly,
For the judgement of his god.

"Step forward now, policeman,
You've born your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in hell"
