Reflections for Police Officer Shannon Ray Stephenson
Shannon, we were best friends in high school. I had heard several years ago that you had passed away. I'm so sorry for your family. We are remembering you on the Decatur High School class of 1969 website.
I see many reflections on here that tell me you were well thought of among your peers.
Rest in peace my friend.

Officer Stephenson,
I was just a child when your watch ended, and how sad the
Community was including my mother whom was a waitress,
just wanted to say you and your family are in all of our
Hearts and Prayers. Thanks for your Service.

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

I never had the privelege to know you because you were taken from this earth before my arrival at GPD. I wanted you and your family to know that you are not forgotten. Your ultimate gift of life/sacrifice is still important to all of us. It reminds us how fragile life is and how important the law enforcement duties have always been and will always be. Without those willing to sacrifice Chaos would ultimately reign. Thanks for your ultimate sacrifice.
R.I.P. Brother-- meet you on the other side when my time comes.

Shannon, Although we never met, Shewchuk always spoke so highly of you. Forgive me Brother, I just found this site or I would have written sooner. I have visited you often over the years. I'll never forget the night Shewchuk and I had the beat and stopped by to see your wife and daughter shortly after you were taken from us. Rest in Peace Brother.

It has been 23 years since we lost you as a partner, friend, father, husband and son. I still have vivid memories of the night we lost you. My son Ryan is now a police office. He and Julie were babies together and it is hard for me to believe that they have both grown up to be adults now. After only 2 months out of recruit class, Ryan lost his best friend and patrol partner last month in a shooting and it brought back many memories.
You were a great friend, husband, father, son and fun to be with cruising around in our ugly baby blue cruiser chasing bad guys and walking the old beats in downtown Gainesville.
You are still missed, thought of often, and prayed for. We miss you.

You left this earth to be with your Heavenly Father on Father's day 23 years ago! Sometimes it seems like yesterday! Many of us still miss you and our prayers continue to go out to Beth and Julie. God be with you!
