True story. My dad was working patrol that day. The KNTV news broadcasted 2 officers shot. Families of SJPD Officers spent the afternoon waiting to find out what was happening.
When we found out it wasn’t our loved one; it didn’t make it any easier. Collectively, families mourned.
Best,

Gene was a beat cop by my house across the street from Doehr park. He would stop by as he passed and my parents would talk to him as he sat in his car. My mom would run in the house and get food for him.. She's not even Italian. I remember Gene as cool guy. He wore the Dirty Harry sunglasses. My friend's dad owned the bar right across the street from the shootout. He watched the whole thing but never talked about it. It's been a very long time but I just wanted the family to know he was not only a good cop but a good guy

Gordo was my friend when I was a kid dreaming of a way out (I never told him of the nightly molest at "home"). He believed in me. I named my daughter after him (Jamie Lynn Gordine Harvey 9/11/91). She only lived 6 hours, but was a fighter the whole time.
Just want someone to know that I tried to honor Gordy, and his "namesake", my baby, is immortalized on my left ankle.
I miss you tons,Gordo, and will never forget you

I met Gordon in High School. He lived two doors down from me. All I have is good thoughts when remembering him. In the early 70's I ran into him in Los Gatos and then again in 1980 out in front of the courthouse in San Jose.
He was always pleasant and never had anything bad to say about anyone. The sound of his voice was so relaxing and he always made one feel welcome.
He is missed. People like Gordon are rare

Gordy was my best friend and best man at my wedding,
We worked as campus cops together at Foothill at De-Anza college. We both worked for Palo Alto PD where I remained as a police office and Gorden moved on to San Jose PD.
I loved Gorden like a brother and still mourn his death.
I flew with his body to Diamond Heard Memorial Park where he is laid to rest in Hawaii.

I just read a beautiful tribute to you by your friend and fellow officer Noe.
Our heroes never really leave us. Instead they become a part of us...often times the best part
You are missed today by many whose lives you graced.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 23rd anniversary year of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.
Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered. As I read the refection of Officer Jerome, I am reminded of how vivid the memories are of the officers who respond to or are invloved in a lod shooting. I pray for the solace of all those who love and remember you.
Rest In Peace.

I have probably watched the video of the shooting (filmed by citizens at the scene), at least a hundred times. It is truly amazing that this deranged suspect's actions, did not lead to more killed.
The evolving confusion of this unfortunate event, led to several crossfire situations, and the performance by the San Jose Police Department and assisting agencies, on that day was truly heroic.

May You Rest-In-Peace.

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

In early 1986, I was still a probationary-officer, I was admin-assigned to a "downtown" squad ("team") of which "Gordy" was also a part: His HUMOR was uplifting! He knew the streets, too, he had every known "bad guy" in District King (at the time it was "District 5") listed and compiled in his brief case. On that day, January 20, 1989, I was working day shift in an adjoining district when it was broadcast that this shoot-out was occcuring. I went to the scene, I saw Gordy being placed into the ambulance; Terry was dead, lying nearby. I cried all day and night. ... Gordy's picture is in the hall of the Police Admin Building... Gordy is NOT forgotten ...
