Reflections for Deputy Sheriff Robert Shultz

Rest in peace Robert

Carson loveless

Robert Shulz's widow was Mildred Shulz who mourned him every day of her ninety years, passing herself in 2013. They had no children but she showered her attention on the son of family friends and his eventual family. The loss of him shattered her sense of permanence and well-being, and she fought to retain optimism and joy.

Sonny, I did not know you. You were killed when I was very young, but I have heard the family story and have read the articles of that fateful day. You were my father's cousin. You were given the family name Robert named for your grandfather and uncle, but everyone called you Sonny. The pictures of you as a little boy - big brown eyes, so cute, so loved by your family. What might have been if you had lived? Would you have married, had kids, lived your life to the fullest? But for that time in our country's history, a child with a gun was incomprehensible. You were too noble to shoot a child. You died a hero. We still have so much to learn about mental illness.

Although it has been many years since you were killed in the line of duty, tonight I came across your memorial site. No officer should be left without a memorial reflection. I am honored to be the first. God's peace be with you; rest in peace, Deputy.
