Rest in peace always knowing that your service and sacrifice will never, ever be forgotten by your law enforcement brethren.

Officer Sheehan was my uncle. He was killed 24 years before I was born. Although I never met him, his sister - my mother - made sure that my brother Paul and I knew who my uncle was and why his service was so important.
I am a retired teacher. I can assure you that every student I ever taught learned about my uncle and the extraordinary heroism he and his fallen brothers and sisters displayed.

My father was John Joseph Sheehan and was the 6th of 7 children. His father was Thomas David Sheehan (whose father was David in Ireland) and Thomas' first born son was named David (born 1913). My father told us that my grandfather used the name David, was a NYPD officer and was killed during a robbery in the 1920's. Perhaps this fallen officer was really Thomas David Sheehan and if so, he would have been my grandfather. My grandmother died in the 1930's, having been a stay at home mother, orphaning all the children. My father never had further contact with any of his siblings and was adopted to a woman through Catholic charities. Perhaps someday a close relative with my fathers DNA will appear on Ancestry.com or Gedmatch.com and can answer what happened to my other aunts & uncles. Even if this officer is not my grandfather, I thank him for his service and pray there is never another officer killed in the line of duty.

To fully appreciate the heroes of the present, we must recognize our heroes of the past. Your heroism and service is honored today, the 88th anniversary year of your death. I am priviliged to be among the first to leave a tribute to you. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.
Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered. Rest In Peace.

I said a little prayer today for Patrolman Sheehan and his family. He may be gone but never forgotten. He will always be a New York HERO.
