35 years ago I learned of Ed's death while on vacation. It's hard to believe it was that long ago.
We should never forget what he gave to the citizens of Lower Merion and greater Delaware Valley.
Rest easy old friend.

I attended his services, and interment at Calvary Cemetery, in West Conshohocken. It was filled with emotional tributes, well deserved. And well attended by not just by fellow Law Enforcement, but by many members of the community he served. A VERY sad day.

Ed was in my police recruit class back in the fall of 1973. We had a great class with a good bunch of eager young guys. Our recruit classes were held at the Montgomery County Community college. Ed was a big funny, likeable guy. It was a shock back in 1988 when I learned he was killed in the line of duty. It hit home just how fast things can go from routine to life threatening. I am at the end of my police career as I am retiring the beginning of this July. I now have time to remember and reflect on many memories I have had over the last 42 years of law enforcement in a way I have not had time to do. Many are emotional, happy, great, serious and positive memories. I can only wish to all members of the law enforcement family, God bless and thank you for your sacrifices. Continue the good fight!

To this day I have not met anyone who could make me laugh the way you did. I think of you often but especially this time of year when PSU takes the field. I still tell stories of your pranks and your nose to pick up criminal activity. You gave me some of my grey hair but I am honored to have known & worked with you. God bless you, Julie, Chris, Mark & Louis

Although, we had never met, my sister was one of Kendal Hatfield's victims and as the anniversary of that awful day where he took her innocence, I would like you to know, not a year goes by that I don't remember you and your family in my thoughts~

I am forever grateful to you for the ultimate sacrifice!

It saddens me how unfortunate for all you left behind, that your sacrifice gave my family some closure and peace.

I stopped to reflect on Ed on the anniversary of his death Wednesday by visiting the National Memorial in DC.
I worked side by side with Ed, what seems not so long ago. My thoughts wondered to his wife and children and I hope they are well. They were so young when this happened, too young to loose their dad.
To Ed, our hero, who gave himself, and fought the good fight, we still remember you and your sacrifice.
Rest well my friend…

POLICE OFFICER
PHILA PA

February 23, 2008

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.
