To Paul Peterson: I had not checked this site in some time. I was so excited to read your note. Yes my father was Harold W. Schmidt. and my brother is Harold C. Schmidt who lives in Spring Lake, MI. Actually Olga an Emil had Edna, Lucille, Mildred and Gertrude and my dad Harold. I would love to hear more from you. I was pretty excited to see my Grandfathers name on the Fallen officers wall. Lucille had a son Paul. Lost touch with him years ago. Please let me know if you have more info or even questions for me. Not sure I have many answers but maybe you might have some for me!

I am the 2nd great nephew-in-law of Emil Schmidt. I've been doing family research of my great-grandfather's family bloodline through his siblings, of which Olga Brown Schmidt, Emil's wife, was John Brown's younger sister who followed him to Manistee County and found Emil in Eastlake and married him. They had a daughter together, Edna, and moved back to Detroit, but she died at the age of 4 of Diptheria.
I have come to be moved by their story and saddened to hear of Officer Emil Schmidt's cruel death in the line of duty. His sacrifice will not be forgotten. And I hope the use of this forum to connect with a descendant of his is not improper... it is the only lead I have at this point to follow down on this man's bloodline, which I believe is a great testament to his life, that his descendants and relatives have contact to remember him and his story and the struggles he left behind. Through us, he left his mark on the world. In light of these events, Olga was a family heroine.
Please contact me, Barbara. Your father must be Harold W Schmidt then...

Emil Schmidt was my grandfather. My father, his son was 2 yrs old when he was killed. My grandmother then went on to raise four children on her own. If anyone has any more information on this I would be very interested in hearing about it. My children did not know their grandfather, my dad, because he died in 1980. They were born in 1986 and 1989. Thank you in advance for any info, old newpaper articles anything.
