Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Police Officer Frank Robert Schlatt

God rest his soul.

I first met Frank while he was serving in the Navy. He would ask me questions about my police service and training. He was sure that serving as a police officer was his long term goal after he completed his military service. I encouraged him to apply to my department, Ohio State Patrol, but he found a better situation for himself at the Atlanta Police Dept. He was a very personable, caring person, may God bless.

Hi Frank,
I'll never forget working with you on APD. You were a great officer and person, and I am a better man for having known you. It's been over 40 years, and every May I think about you. You are with the Lord, now.

My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered. Rest In Peace.

I pray for solace for all those that love and remember you for I know both the pain and pride are forever. Your family is in my heart's embrace. Thanks to your family and friends for sharing their memories and devotion to you through their reflections.

Frank,
You were my partner over 30 years ago & I think of you constantly. So much of life has passed but I know I will never meet a person like you again. You were the personification of a dedicated, honest and decent police officer and man.
I struggle for words to describe the impact you have had on my life. Because of you I am a different person.
I will never forget you. While society moves on and quickly forgets sacrifices like yours -your family and police brothers will not. Thirty years later you are alive in our hearts. My love to your family. See you in heaven.

You will always be remembered by me and my family. My Daddy was the manager of the furniture store where you were killed. He passed away in 2005. All of his life, he said that he felt you died in his place that day. He never forgot you and felt so bad for you and your family. Your daughter was around the same age as me and my sister.
He waited anxiously for 13 years for McCleskey to be electricuted. He hoped that he would feel peace after that but sadly he didn't. He was always grateful for the sacrifice you made by serving as a policeman.

I read the tribute that the late author Lewis Grizzard wrote about you in one of his books. It was a moving piece and it was obvious from his writing that you touched a lot of lives. You are still remembered brother...even now.

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Rest Peacefully Officer Schlatt for you are remembered.

May 13, 2006

Daddy, I never got to say good-bye the way I should have been able to, that was taken away from me. As the years have passed I have found comfort in knowing
1)the justice system you worked for and defended,FINALLY defended you and executed McCleskey and
2)you are still with me in spirit and some day we'll be together again.
I wrote this poem in 1979 for you...

Ode to My Dad

My dad was a policeman in blue
It was a job he always wanted to do
He was thin and not too tall
But to me he was the biggest of all

He answered a silent alarm one day
With the sound of a gun blast on the floor he lay
My dad on earth, again I will never see
But in my heart he will ALWAYS be!!!

I love you, Daddy
