On the 65th anniversary of Detective Savage's death, we honored his service in our patrol briefing by reading his entry from ODMP. Each day, we honor one fallen officer on the anniversary of their death so as to keep them in our thoughts, and also to remind us of the dangers inherent in our job. Detective Savage is not forgotten.

This is my great- grandfather. His daughter was my grandmother. Unfortunately both of them died before I could get to know them. Such a tragedy.

I am the Great Grandaughter of Lemuel Dodd Savage. My mother Lisa is his Grandaughter and My Grandmother, Bernice was his daughter. He died 36 years before I was born. I know little about him except that he was killed in the line of duty. My grandmother could never speak much about him to my mom without becoming upset. I am sure he was a great man and his memory will live on through out generations.

"Pop" Savage died 14 years before I was born, but my mother told me stories about him, and how much she loved him. Decades after his death, her eyes would well up with tears if she spoke of him at any great length. She was with him in the hospital when he passed, and I don't think she was ever the same again. My aunt, his other daughter, told me about his lovely blue eyes, and his beautiful bass singing voice and that he loved to sing. My grandmother never remarried after Pop's death, saying that she had had the best and wasn't interested in marrying a second time. She went to her grave loving him. I would have given anything to have known him, to have heard his voice and listened to his stories. He is a hero to me, as are all the officers who have given their all in the line of duty.

I'm your first granddaughter. You died 9 years before I was born, but your murder affected this family in profound and irreversible ways. I wish I'd known you and that "Jack" had had her daddy for a lot longer.

Although we never met, I know how he chose to protect his community and I've seen the good he still inspires in others. I'm honored to be his grandson.
