Reflections for Correctional Officer Jerry Sanders

I will never forget that day. I was the unit Sergeant and with him not five minutes before he was assaulted. I still have dreams about seeing him being removed from the unit. He was and still dearly missed.

Officer Sanders,
On today, the 50th anniversary of your death I would just like to say thank you for your service and sacrifice for the citizens of the state of California. And to your Family and loved ones, I wish to extend my deepest sympathy. There is no tougher job in Law Enforcement than that of a Corrections Officer.

I never had the opportunity to work with Officer Sanders, I started my career 6 years after the murder of Sanders. Many of those whom I worked with knew Sanders and were working when the incident happened. J wing was the place where Sanders was killed. Unfortunately the suspects did not receive the correct punishment for their crime. RIP Jerry Sanders.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 37th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Your sacrifice was made so many years ago. Evil was, is, and will be a part of life just as goodness such as yours will also be present. The cycle of violence directed against correctional officers in the bloody early seventies began with the murder of Officer Mills and you were part of that chain of violence.

Rest In Peace
