Fourty years later and the little girl I heard crying for her daddy that day is now a grown woman searching to close the wound that never goes away. I am helping her and those of us still left who remember that terrible day.
God bless you Rueben. I know you watch over her but also give a sign to brother Eric that you are at peace..

Hey good looking, those are words that stayed in my head every time I think of you! You would always say that to me when I ran into you, we miss you dearly. You left a good example to all of left behind. We will never forget you "tio", We offen think about all the bar-be-ques that we had as a family, you left that tratition behind with us. I always remember you were the one with the rag on the back pocket to wipe your hands after turing the meat or just gettig a taste, you would always ask your fellow officers to stop by to pick up a plate to eat, that was so cool.I remember how much you loved your girls!! Gosh that was a love that I will never forget, they were your world. Our hearts were broken to see you leave us, but I know we will see each other again . Missing you always and forever--"Tonia"-Maria A. Perales

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Brother, I am sorry I have never been able to leave a message to your memory. Today, I salute you and the others who have gone too. That terrible day, God "Promoted" another Angel to his Army and it was you sir. On the wings of a dove you soared and today you and your fellow comrades ridealong with those of us still here in battle.

To my uncle who guided me as a child. I was only 5 when you left. Now I am a police officer myself. I look up to you everyday as a light to lead me. Currently I am in Iraq I remember hearing about you in Vietnam. Although I will never compare to you I will try to be as great as you following in every footstep. Love, Diego Solis

At the beginning of every shift I supervise, myself and the other officers on shift dedicate the day to the memory of a fallen officer. Today, July 27, 2003 we dedicated the shift to the memory of Sgt. Ruben Almanza who died on this date 19 years ago.
When one law enforcement officer falls, we all stumble for a while, but we will carry on.
Sgt. Almanza's sacrifice will never be forgotten.

You did not die in vain, nor will you be forgotten. Thank you.
