Today, thanks to this site, I have become aware of your line of duty death. My thoughts and prayers are for those colleagues and family members you left behind. You are a hero in life, not death. Your sacrifice will not be forgotten.

Over two decades have passed since your EOW and you have not been forgotten nor will that ever be the case. You are a true hero and heroes never die. Continue to watch over your loved ones and those still out on patrol. Thank you for your dedicated service to law enforcement.

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Officer Deanna Hummel Rose and Family,

My husband and I are also Overland Park Police Officers and want to let you know that you are always in our thoughts. I often give station tours to groups of kids along with their parents. Our first stop is always the wall of your memorial. I ask everyone if they have ever been to the Deanna Rose Farmstead. Most, if not all, know and have been to the Farmstead. I tell them Officer Rose gave her life for the safety of our citizens in Overland Park. I ask them to remember you when they return to visit the Farmstead. Your Farmstead has approximately 400 thousand visitors a year. It is truely wonderful that Overland Park has a place to remember you where families can visit in your memory.

Deanna,

My dad, Shawnee,KS Officer Donald B Gamblin Jr, was one of the first officers on scene. He was deeply touched and often talked about your sacrifice. He to lost his life in the line of duty. I had the great pleasure of meeting your dad in Topeka this year. You would have been so proud of him. It was truely an honor to hear his speech. It is because of your sacrifice that we have the freedoms we have and we feel safe. God bless you and your family.

Just a few months before Deanna Rose's death, she and three other officers responded to a call to my house when a workman became belligerant and aggressive. After they'd escorted the workman out of the house and one of the officers was taking my report, Deanna busied herself with comforting my young daughter. She was so loving, gentle and kind. They talked of their shared love for horses and became fast friends. Deanna stopped by our house a few times after that just to visit my daughter. They talked about someday both being mounted police officers for the same department. Two days before her assault, we saw Deanna in her squad car and she waved. She touched our lives and we will never forget her. Today on National Law Enforcment Memorial Day, I am reflecting on the wonderful person Deanna Rose was and honoring her memory.

It will almost be 20 years since our family lives were changed forever. We will forever be proud of you and miss you. I'm your little sister and was 19 when you were lost to us. I now hold in my hands the lifeline of other officers on the street and do my best to keep them safe and aware. You brought to me the family of Law-Enforcement and how close we all are to one another. Thats one of the reasons why I went into the agency. Not as a cop, but as a lifeline for them. Deanna you will always be close to my heart. Help me always to keep others safe and return home after each shift.

Even though it has been 19 years since your death, those who knew you and worked with you will never forget you or the scrafice that you made. I remember meeting with you from time to time while we were working or backing you from time to time on a car stop along the Lenexa-Overland Park border. It sure doesn't seem like it's been that long ago. As I frequently drive along I-35 near 75 Street where you were killed, thoughts of you and what you would be like today enter my mind. Until we meet again, know that your in my thoughts and prayers and not forgotten.

Rest easy, sister. It seems you were what most aspire to attain and achieve. Rest easy and know you are not forgotten. Never.

I too am an Overland Park Police Officer. I never had the pleasure of meeting you because I did not get hired until 1997. I am stationed at the Antioch Patrol Divison. There is a memorial for your sacrifice in the uppper level at Antioch. I often pass the memorial and see citizens sitting on it. I always want to educate the person sitting on the memorial by telling them it was not built for them to sit on. Although, I have never approached a citizen about them sitting on the memorial, I believe I'll start. Your sacrifice deserves more than to be a temporary seat for some who has never put his/her life on the line.

God bless......and you are not forgotten!

Deanna was a hard charger, she volunteered for special assignments. I remember working with her on a stake out of auto dealers that were being hit by thieves, she was vigilante and focused. We lost a fine young officer on that day in 1985. Those of us that worked with her, miss her.
