I remember you when I joined the Newport News Police Department. I rode with you a couple of times. We both were medics in Vietnam and neither of us shared much of that time because noone understood what we had faced serving as medics during war. A war that America hated and took it out on the soldiers returning home. We would sometimes talk because we understood what we both faced during that time. Thank you for your service during Vietnam, Doc and for serving us so well on the NNPD, you are solely missed.

Uncle Dennis,
For no special reason you came across my mind as you often do. I remember when I was young and Dawn would be at our house and you would come over and take us for a ride or come visit all of us while on a break. It was just like yesterday. We all miss you so much but have used our precious memories of you to help us heal. You may be gone but never forgotten. I love you!!!

I worked closely with D. J. many times as we backed each other on calls in the "east end" of the city. We had become good friends and often rode together to cover our districts. We carpooled together at times, and often went out to eat after finishing the evening shift.I grew to love D.J. like a brother and learned a great deal from him as a Police Officer and benefitted many times from his experience and skill as a top flight cop. I was on vacation the night he was shot. I grieved deeply because of his death and even today I still think of him often and have shared memories of him with my family.
You are greatly missed Brother , you left an unforgettable memory in my heart and mind. I look forward to seeing you again in a much better place.

I knew DJ when I served with him back in 1974. I went to his funeral. I rode with him during my first week on duty. He was smart, tough and a dedicated family man. Ms Roberts, you father was a good and decent man.

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

I will always remember Officer "DJ" Roberts. I was a rookie officer on A shift with him. I will never forget the morning he was killed. What hurt the most was he had a daughter who was about 6 at the time.
