Reflections for Policeman Earl Leonard Riddick

Today, I thought about You. I even sent an E-mail to Your son ( who is now a proud sworn member of the LAPD Family )!
He was not aware of this website.
I know You had a reputation for being a good cop with compassion, and You chose to confront the Suspect in the parking lot away from innocent bystanders. Legally, You could have just as welll shot a fleeing violent felon, but chose to give him an opportunity to surrender. Being off-duty, You could have just as easily been nothing more than a "good witness," but most of us "don't roll that way on LAPD."
Retired / present "OG's" know how I study the history of the Department and have been so kind sharing stories and artifacts. Being the pack rat that I am, I now have in my possession an LAPD publication from 1970, which mentions You.
John Miller ( Retired )and I discussed the fact that many do not know that Your shot shattered the rear window of the Suspect's vehicle, leading to other officers conducting an investigative stop. Of course, the anal pore chose to shoot it out with the wrong Cowboys.
I hope to spend some time with Your son.
May You Rest-In-Peace.

In April of 1970, I was working patrol with Earl. To this day, I remember the day he was killed, and how I found out about his murder. (The suspect's name, as I recall, was Charles Mack, who had recently been parolled for armed robbery. After he was parolled, he committed multilpe robberies and murders). Earl was a quiet, professional policeman, and I remember many calls we handled together. I was one of the pall bearers at Earl's funeral the day we laid him to rest, and his death has been (and still is) very hard on me. See you at EOW Earl...Ken

Earl's death was really hard on me. We had been in the same National Guard unit and I had convinced him to join the Department and had worked with him while he was preparing for the academy and while he was actually in the academy.

I had the pleasure of partnering up with Earl on numerous occassions in the year prior to his tragic death. He was a fine man and an outstanding street cop. He died doing what he loved. Earl, rest in peace.

I too saw the episode of "LAPD- Life on the Beat", in which your son graduated. What a tribute to your heroism. God holds a special place for those who give their lives in the service of others. May he now join you in watching over your son. Rest in Peace, brother.

~~~~~The Broken Chain~~~~~
We little knew that morning that God was going to call your name.~~In life we loved you dearly, in death we do the same.~~It broke our hearts to lose you, you did not go alone; for part of us went with you, the day God called you home.~~You left us peaceful memories, your love is still our guide; and though we cannot see you, you are always at our side.~~Our family chain is broken, and nothing seems the same; but as God calls us one by one, the Chain will link again.
Don't grieve for me for now I'm free,
I'm following the path God laid for me.
I took His hand when I heard Him call,
I turned my back and left it all.
I could not stay another day,
To laugh, to love, to work, or play.
Tasks left undone must stay that way,
I've found a peace at the close of the day.
If my parting has left a void,
Then fill it with remembered joy.
A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss,
Ah yes, these things I too will miss.
Be not burdened with times of sorrow,
I wish you all the sunshine of tomorrow.
My life's been full, I've savored so much,
Good friends, good times, a loved one's touch.
Perhaps my time seemed all to brief,
Don't lengthen it now with undue grief.
Lift up your hearts and share with me,
for God wanted me now, He set me free.
Semper Fidelis....(Always Faithful)
