As a new west liberty police officer and seeing your picture in the main entrance of the station and curious about you and the towns history I have sworn to protect . Although I’m not from west liberty but I am from a small town that is just like it. Reading the story and the warm words from people that remember you. All of the current officers are continuing to do what you did so long again and running into some of the older people that knew you I feel privileged to patrol the same streets as you. Although your gone you are not forgot and the town surly misses you.

I was 11 years old the day this incredible man was shot and killed less than half a block from where we lived. As a youth in West Liberty, I had many encounters with Marshal Ricketts. All of them positive. Home life at that time was not good. I would slip out of the house late at night to find some peace. It seemed that each time Marshal Ricketts was there. He put me in the front of his cruiser and ride me around town. He always had a bag of cinnamon ball candy on the seat. He even took me to his home one time for fresh made cake. He encouraged me and kept me on a
good path for life. I love you Sherman Ricketts.

I was 16 when Marshall Ricketts was shot; we lived just north of West Liberty. Marshall Ricketts was known to be a good pistol shot and he demonstrated it, shooting accurately even after suffering wounds which would prove fatal. Marshall Ricketts was an old lawman but he showed metal when the chips were down. He is an American hero.

To fully appreciate the heroes of the present, we must recognize our heroes of the past. Your heroism and service is honored today, the 50th anniversary year of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered. Rest In Peace

It's been 50 years since that night that you acted to protect the community. Many of us from West Libery have spent itme over the past few days in reflection of that fateful night. You are so much appreciated and all of us are thankful. You have family and others who were just kids during those days and now we either are or have been Police Officers. Your sacrifice gave us courage.
