Corporal Rains, I attended your father's memorial service today, in Louisiana.

I started work at the Post Office on the 26th of May, 1984, just days before you gave all.

I know you and Ed are reunited in a wonderful meeting in heaven...

Well, over 30 years now. I still see you clear as ever. Remember eating the Cajun food in Northglenn on the code 7? All the tricks. Still miss you and think of you every day.

To fully appreciate the heroes of the present, we must recognize our heroes of the past. Your heroism and service is honored today, the 28th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered.

I pray for solace for all those that love and remember you for I know both the pain and pride are forever. Your family is in my heart's embrace. Thanks to your family and friends dor sharing their memories and devotion to you through their reflections. I am sure you are proud that your family has continued your legacy of protecting and serving.

Rest In Peace.

I opened a memorial page for you on the web site "police-together we served". You would have been amazed at how far computers have come. Bridgett and Vickie were impressed and seem to be doing well. I think about you often, especially in retirement and think about all the Cajun food we could have enjoyed together! Rest well friend.

On the 26th anniversary of Corporal Rains' death, we honored his service in our patrol briefing by reading his entry from ODMP. Each day, we honor one fallen officer on the anniversary of their death so as to keep them in our thoughts, and also to remind us of the dangers inherent in our job. Corporal Rains is not forgotten.

Corporal Rains - My eyes teared up as I read some of these reflections. Your are, clearly, still very muched loved and admired. Two Fridays ago, on a very rainy morning, I stood in the State Assembly chambers when your name was one of the almost 250 read off during a vote regarding next month's Police Memorial Week. You are not forgotten. Thank you for your service to the people of Northglenn and the state of Colorado. May God grant you eternal rest and may his perpetual light shine upon you.

Cpl. Rains story was taught through my early years as an Adams County and Commerce City Explorer. Through his sacrifice, many lives have been saved due to the training we have received regarding crossfire issues. I applaud Cpl. Rains for his service and to know he has a daughter working with us is an honor.

Thank you,

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Corporal E.B. Rains, You are a special person. I lived in that neighborhood and to have something so trajic occur such as this was horrible. I sometimes drive by that house and can still see the horrible images from 1984.
I've had the pleasure working with your daughter Bridgette. She is a very great person and speaks very high of you. We both work for the same agency and talk about you often. You would be so proud of her today.

Over 23 years have passed since your tragic and untimely death. I hope the pain your friends and family feel are not as intense as they once were. As for your fellow Officer who accidentally fired the fatal round, I wonder how he is coping. I pray he or she is doing ok. To be honest, I don't know how I could live with myself knowing that I killed one of the "good guys" by accident. Reading your memorial has brought me to tears; and I'm not ashamed of it. Everyone lost out that day. I choose to believe that YOU are the victor here. Maybe God needed another LEO in Heaven, I don't know. To Bridgett: I KNOW your Daddy is proud of you and watches over you and the rest of your friends and family. So Corporal Rains, I salute you! Until in Heaven one day we meet, keep walking your beat on the Golden Street. God Bless you all!

Dad,
I know that you gave your life for something that you loved and believed in.Even though it has been over 22 years since your death, it still effects me like it was yesterday. I miss you everyday! Mom misses you so much and she has never been the same. She says she lost her soul mate and best friend that day.Brandon is a spitting image of you and I know he struggles sometimes knowing that he never got to know you like the rest of us have.I hope that I've made you proud over the years.I do get sad sometimes thinking about everything that you have missed; all of the Holidays, my High School Prom,my High School Graduation, College Graduation, my Wedding,Brandon's Graduation from High School, Brandon's Wedding, Brandon's completion of Basic Training in the Army, Brandon's return from Iraq..and so much more. I always wonder what advice you woud be giving Brandon and I today and how much different our lives would have turned out with you in it. I went back to Louisiana in July and Paw Paw and Uncle D told funny stories about you and I just laughed and laughed. I felt like you were there with us just laughing along. I really miss you dad and everyone misses and loves you too. I can only hope and pray that you are at peace and eventually, all of your family and friends will see you again.
Love always,
Bridgett

I remember the night that Corporal Rains was killed. I was 14 years old, a 9th grader at Huron Junior High in Northglenn. Even before then I would see Northglenn's finest and wish I could be one of them.
I was deeply saddened by the stories of the loved ones left behind and I hope that the pain is just a little easier to handle. I remember my mother crying and the sense of shock we all felt.
I visit the park every time I'm back in Colorado. More so now that I have fulfilled my dream, do I understand the honor that you lived your life by.
Corporal Rains, I am honored just to remember your story and hear of the stories about you. You are one reason my ODMP wrist band never comes off. Keep an extra eye out for me and all of us until we join you.

I WAS ON EB'S TEAM. I WASN'T ON DUTY THE NIGHT HE WAS KILLED. I WAS ON INJURY LEAVE. CAPTAIN GUNDERSON CALLED ME AT HOME EARLY IN THE MORNING AND TOLD ME. MY WIFE AND I CRIED THINKING ABOUT VICKY AND THE KIDS. EB WAS A CORPORAL AND SHIFT COMMANDER. HE ALWAYS CHECKED ON HIS SHIFT TO SEE THEY WERE PROPERLY PREPARED AND PROTECTED BEFORE HITTING THE STREET. HE CARED ABOUT EVERYONES HEALTH "IS THAT PIZZA MEATLESS????" HE ATE GARLIC EVERY DAY FOR GOOD HEALTH. HE WAS ALWAYS A GOOD SPORT WHEN THE SHIFT PLAYED A PRACTICAL JOKE ON HIM AND WE SHARED THE SAME SENSE OF HUMOR AND LOVE FOR CAJUN FOOD. HE TRULY IS STILL MISSED AFTER ALL THESE YEARS. ONLY THE GOOD DIE YOUNG.

Everytime I look at a police officer I am reminded that they have a family waiting at home for them. They put their lives on the line everyday. Blaine was my first cousin and I know how his death affected our family. I will always honor the memory of how he gave his life to protect others.
