Reflections for Deputy Sheriff William Henry Rafford
William Henry Rafford was my great great grandfather. His death changed the entire course of history for my family and forced his oldest son, my great grandfather Paul Rafford, Sr. to leave school at the age of 14 and go to work to support his family. There were no benevolent funds, insurance or support for officers and their families who were killed in the line of duty at the turn of the Century. My family struggled just to keep from starving and to recover from the loss of such a fine dedicated family man.

I said a little prayer today for Deputy Sheriff Rafford and his family. He may be gone but never forgotten. He will always be a New York HERO.

I heard the story on many occasions about my great great grandfather's bravery and courage and how his 15 year old son, my Pop, had to quit school and get a job to support the family. Most of the family moved to Delaware in the 1940's and I met many of them when I was a young boy in the 50's.

My great, great grandfather was Sheriff Henry Howard Preston. He served from 1903 to 1906. Warden Rafford and Sheriff Preston rode to the shooter's house to serve a civil summons, and Mr. Rafford was killed.
I would like to be able to speak to any of Warden Rafford's descendants or relatives.

Going to work each day, leaving your young family for what was hoped to be a few hours can not have been easy knowing every day could bring a new jeopardy. I thank you for your dedication to community and your ultimate and supreme sacrifice in the line of duty, rest in peace.
