I am the son of Nassau County Patrolman Fiore Coletta shield number 378. My father was the other officer that was seriously injured when officer Pickwick lost his life that night. My father spoke very highly of officer Pickwick over the years. I still have the Newsday photo of Officer Pickwick and my Dad both laying there after the accident occurred. Very sad....God Bless officer Pickwick and may he Rest In Peace!

May he rest in peace. When I was a rookie in 1962 I witnessed a very similar accident involving Ptl. Bob DeMaio, 8th Pct. Fortunately Bob did not die as a result of his injuries.

My wife's uncle, Bill (WC) Miller, was a rookie Third Pct. Cop when PO Pickwick was killed. They both lived in Bellrose, and Bill described Bob as a good Cop, and a really good guy. The circumstances of his death were as follows: PO Pickwick was on patrol on Hillside Ave. in NHP. He came across a fellow Officer who had a motorist pulled over for a VTL violation. He got out of his RMP and walked up to back up the other Officer, who was sitting in his RMP. As he was standing at the drivers window, he was hit by a drunk driver, and went flying into the back of the vehicle of the original motorist that had been pulled over. He was killed instantly.

I am a 35 yr veteran of NCPD. My shield number was 538 when I was a patrolman later then changed to police officer title. Did not know for a few yrs that it was the same shield number and probably shield of Patrolman Pickwick. After I retired as a detective I was privileged and honored to retrieve my old shields including Patrolmen Sh number 538.
It helps me to NEVER FORGET.

To fully appreciate the heroes of the present, we must recognize our heroes of the past. Your heroism and service is honored today, the 53rd anniversary year of your death. I am priviliged to be among the first to leave a tribute to you. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.
Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered. Rest In Peace.

I was a rookie patrolman just out of the Acadamy in Jan.1960. Bob lived on myfoot post I was so impressed with the he told me about how to be a good cop. He turned out to be a good friend and I really was devestated when he was injured and later doed. I was workign the same mid-night shift he was, but had been assigned to another post on tha sad night

Patrolman Pickwick,
You are not forgotten by all as I still keep your department photo of you in uniform on my desk in my den. Its
been forty six years since you made the ultimate sacrifice on August 7th,1960. You will always be remembered by a few good people due to the fact you made a difference in a short five years. I have even been by the old house in Bellrose all things change. We who remember know you look down on us from heaven and your memory lives in a few of us.
