Officer Pennington,
You served our country in what is arguably the most horrific war in human history. After the war was won, you returned home and decided your service was not at an end. You continued to serve your community as a police officer. When your were not on duty, you showed by example that service is not a uniform you put on, but a quality embedded within you. You noticed a crime that may have endangered a fellow officer. You did not care that you were "Off Duty." You stepped in to assist and made the ultimate sacrifice at just thirty years of age.
I thank you for your courage, sacrifice, and dedication. The spirit of who you were will not be lost.

As a recruit with the Vernon Police Department, Officer Richard Pennington’s story is both inspiring and humbling. His actions, even off duty, showed incredible dedication to protecting his community. His sacrifice, so early in his time with the department, is a reminder of the risks this job carries and the impact it has on families and the community. It’s a powerful example of courage and commitment, and it motivates me to approach this role with the same sense of duty and integrity.
