This week, I provided a Lieutenant with a copy of the photograph depicting Your patrol vehicles and the photograph depicting the four of You at the Coroner's Office.
Many are aware that the CHP made several changes as a direct result of Your incident.
What many do did not know regarding Your tragic incident is the following:
More than twenty years after that tragic day, I represented the LAPD at a California P.O.S.T. conference regarding rewriting the textbook for patrol tactics. It was because of Your tragic incident that I was able to convince the LAPD as well as P.O.S.T. to dispense with the term "felony vehicle pullovers." Your incident involved a crime that was only a Misdemeanor. As a result today we use the term "high-risk vehicle pullover."
The Lieutenant and I will be showing the CHP tape and discussing Your murder at an upcoming Roll Call. Rest-In- Peace, Brothers.....

Officer Pence: Because of your sacrifice as well as the sacrifices of Officers Gore, Alleyn and Frago, all of law enforcement has benefitted. There is not a traffic stop made in this country without your legacy working.
The "Newhall Incident" made "officer safety" a term that means something that actually works...not just a textbook term and it is because of you and the other three fine CHP officers that night. God bless you for saving the lives of countless other officers. You truly do work the beats of every officer in this country.
I pray still for your families and hope they are comforted knowing you are in a better place and that you blue angels in Heaven are going to be re-united with your loved ones.
Thank you for your courage, duty, and sacrifice. You are loved, appreciated and honored and missed all these 36 years later.
Love,
LoVae Pray Martines, Law Enf. Liaison

As a new officer, 23 years ago, the Newhall incident was driven into ours heads. Let their bravery never be forgotten. I had forgotten the date of this tragedy was April 06th. My first day as a trooper was April 06th as well as my wife's birthday. It shows the ties we all have together.

Officer Pence,
As a young man growing up in Newhall, I remember the tragedy that occured. Both my father and mother were in law enforcement in Los Angeles and Los Angeles County. The resulting changes in tactics as a result of the "Newhall Incident" has saved countless lives in the law enforcement community. May you and your fellow Officers rest in peace knowing that your lives were not lost in vain. You gave the ultimate sacrifice, may you continue to walk with angels.

I stop by this website often after the death of two dear friends with the NCSHP (Troopers Calvin Taylor E.O.W. October 3, 2001 and Anthony Cogdill E.O.W. May 30, 2003).
We all grieve over the lives lost in the line of duty. I hope you can find some comfort knowing that there are countless prayers that go out for your family.
Officer Pence, you are remembered on this date of your death. You will always be remembered.
These are senseless tragedies that never seem to stop. God Bless the men and women who continue to serve their communities in our great Nation.

At the beginning of every shift I supervise, myself and the other officers on shift dedicate the day to the memory of a fallen officer. Today, April 6, 2003 we dedicated the shift to the memory of the four CHP Officers who died in the Newhall incident on this date in 1972.
When one law enforcement officer falls, we all stumble for a while, but we will carry on.
The sacrifice made by these officers will never be forgotten.

The Newhall Incident changed the way all of us made traffic stops. Your sacrifice, in turn, saved many, many lives through advanced training. Thank you.
