Reflections for Officer Bobby Tyson Paulk
My brother.
Tomorrow, we dedicate a Hero's Chair to you at the Baytown Police Department. We have a proclamation dedicating tomorrow as Bobby Tyson Paulk Day in the City of Baytown on the 47th anniversary of your End of Watch. You will be presented a United States flag in honor of your service and attended by the Baytown Police Honor Guard. I regret I could not locate any of your family, but you will be well represented by your second family of Baytown officers. Please accept these small tokens in remembrance of your sacrifice.

Bobby, I think of you all the time and I will never forget that night on 09/09/1977 when your unit was struck head on when I gave you CPR until I was pulled away from you. I will see you again one day in God's Kingdom.

Bobby, my brother and friend, I think about you everyday and I look forward when God calls me to Heaven to see you and visit with you again. I pray that no officer has to come upon a brother or sister dying or dead because it is one of the most devastating sights they will have to see and remember. I pray for my brother and sisters everyday that they make it through their shifts without harm and go home safely to their families. I pray that your daughter and son are doing well and that they are safe. Miss you brother but I will see you again when God calls me to Heaven.

THE FINAL INSPECTION
The Officer stood and faced his God,
which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shinning.
Just as bright as his brass.
“Step forward now, Officer.”
“How shall I deal with you?”
“Have you always turned the other cheek?”
“To my Church have you been true?”
The Officer squared his shoulders and said,
“No, Lord, I guess I ain’t,
because those of us that carry badges
can’t always be a saint.”
“I’ve had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I’ve been violent,
because the streets are awfully though.”
“But I never took a penny,
that wasn’t mine to keep.”
“Though I worked a lot of overtime
when the bills got just to steep.”
“And I never passed a cry for help,
though at times I shook with fear.”
“And sometimes, God forgive me,
I’ve wept unmanly tears.”
“I know I don’t deserve a place
among the people here.”
“I never expected or had to much,
but if you don’t, I’ll understand.”
“There was silence all around the Throne
where the saints had often trod.
As the Officer waited quietly,
for the judgment of his God.
“Step forward now, Officer,
you’ve borne your burdens well.”
“Come walk a beat on Heaven’s streets,
because you’ve served your time in Hell.”

My Brother and Friend, it has been over 38 years since I arrived at the scene of your accident, where I gave you CPR until I was pulled from your lifeless body. I hope and pray no other officer has to first hand experience the death of a brother or sister. I remember when Pam and I traveled to Albany, Georgia to lay you to rest at your beloved home town. A couple of years ago I watched a movie called Courage. As I began to watch the movie, I realized it was filmed in Albany, Georgia by your church. As I watched the movie, I cried as I remember you and our times together. I will always remember you and I will never forget you. I look forward to some day that we will be reunited in Heaven.

To fully appreciate the heroes of the present, we must recognize our heroes of the past. Your heroism and service is honored today, the 36th anniversary year of your death. I am priviliged to leave a tribute to you. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Uncle Bobby:
I can still see you sprawled out in Granny's recliner when you would come by on your lunch break. I remember how you would block the way into the kitchen or how you would pinch us with you toes. You were always picking and cutting up with us just to make us holler. I miss you. May you rest in peace.
Your loving neice,
Phyllis Paulk O'Deay
