When I was a nine year old boy, moving to Ventura from a life of relocating (Chicago, Huston, Tulsa, Durango, Farmington, and many more, my father left my life. I was lucky enough to join the BoyScouts, even though I was too young, because Bryce took me and my older brother into his care.
He promoted me to a rank in the troop so that I was able to go on camping trips, took my brother to the first Cinerama film in Los Angeles, and did so many things to make me understand that a man appreciated our family.
Of course I remember when he was killed, and always note the locations when I drive past the murder site on Hwy 33 and the site where the thefts occurred on the 101 and 150.
When he was killed, it was August, and in Ventura, that is the perpetual summer, with blue skies and warm weather every day. However, after his death, it was foggy, drizzly, and cold for some time. Unknown in Ventura!
I still have the wonderful antique hall table he gave my mother when I was 9, since we didn't have one.
I have never met such a wonderful human since then.

I came upon this site quite by accident. I have many great memories of my cousin Bryce. We spent many summers at our grandmother's house on Catalina Island. Bryce was four years older than I was, so when I was ten he was quite my hero. I remember how proud I was when we walked the beach at Avalon together- the little guy with the man.
I remember the day of his death and I am so glad that there is this lasting memorial to his sacrifice.

My name is Brenda Patten Gardner. My father is Bryce's cousin , Frank B. Patten the III and we lived in Ojai during this incident and I will always remember the stories my father told me about Bryce, even though I was only 2 years old when this happened. I wish I could have met this man. May he forever rest in peace.

Thank you for your kind notes regarding our father, Bryce Nevilier PATTEN (no relation to Gen. George PattOn).
I, especially, want to THANK all of the Sheriffs and Police Officers and their families, Ventura High School teachers, students, UCSB professors, administrators and neighbors who reached out to our family, after our father was murdered by three parolees: Roger PARKER, Donald DAVID, and David COMBES. Your support and kindness have not been forgotten... and remain a 'light of hope', in a memory filled with great loss.
We share in the grief as family, with those families who have suffered sacrifice; may there be less of that loss, in times to come...

Thank you for your kind thoughts about my father, Bryce N. PATTEN. Aux. Deputy Sheriff, who was a full time Ventura High School teacher. He was survived by my mother Diane Patten, me , and my sister. He was shot multiple times in the back as he was walking back to his patrol care to radio in the IDs of the occupants of the vehicle that he had stopped at his roadblock. The murderer immediately fled the scene, leaving his wallet behind. Dad survived just long enough for his backup to arrive in his final moments.

I knew Bryce Patton, he was a full time teacher at Ventura Senior High School in the 1950's, he had been one of my teachers.
I learned of his murder while was in the Army, stationed at Ft. Ord, California in 1960. After the Army I was inspired by the man Mr. Patton was and went into Police work. I was a reserve Officer for the Ventura Police Department in 1963 then accepted as a full time Officer with the Ventura Police Department from 1963 to mid 1969, when I became a Deputy Sheriff in Oregon. Thank you Mr. Patton, you were a good teacher and were a Law enforcement Hero, thank you, I will always remember you.
