Grandpa, Joanne is now with you and Grandma and Louis. Please take care of our beautiful Mom. Thank you for your service as a policeman-so sorry that you were shot in the line of duty. I will meet you soon (please tell Mom, Grandma and Louis that I love you all), but not yet. Love you bunches, Barb

I too heard about Louis A. Abbot's death on an episode of Dragnet. Condolances to his family. Too bad
things have gotten even worse in Chicago in the 73 years since his death.

I hope you will forgive a stranger posting here. Tonight I listened to an old radio broadcast of Dragnet, from 1949. At the end of the episode it was announced that the show was dedicated to Officer Louis Abbott of Chicago. I immediately looked him up and found out the real story of his heroism and his sacrifice. It literally brought me to tears. He died protecting innocent people from a murderer. I would especially like his daughter Joanne Ahrweiler to know that, even after all these years, there is someone out here who honors her Father's courage. Chicago was safer that night because of Officer Abbott. For what it's worth....he is a true hero. And heroes are eternal.

From 1947, Private Papers "I 've always read your column and I know you will read this note of thanks giving from a police officers wife "Lou and Bill were friends . One nite a little over a year ago they kept a vigil.Lou was fighting for his life and Bill , was beside him trying so hard to help, when morning came, Lou whispered ' Bill I will never forget you ' Two days later the buddies lost their fight, " I 've often thought of Lou's words, and I think his words formed a barricade against the bullets aimed at Bill last week, Lou was police man Lou Abbott who died last year from a gunman's bullet Bill is my husband Police officer William Hyland,,,

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 65th anniversary year of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.
Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered.
Rest In Peace.

Nearly six decades after his sudden, violent and sad death, Patrolman Abbott is still remembered, and still remembered as a hero, through a mention on WAMU-FM's (Washington, DC) August 2005 rebroadcast of the radio drama "Dragnet," originally broadcast on August 11, 1949.
