Dad was a corrections officer for 25 years and was on duty the night the famous Santa Fe Prison riot occurred.Dad is 92 years old and he was proud of his job. He was proud of the fact that he respected and treated the inmates humanly and respected his fellow officers. Dad would say that once the gates closed behind you it was natural for persons to experience stress, tension and even fear.
Dad worked in the old Territorial Prison on Pen Road in central Santa Fe and out at the Riot Prison built in 1955. The Territorial prison is probably where filimon Ortiz was murdered.

To fully appreciate the heroes of the present, we must recognize our heroes of the past. Your heroism and service is honored today, the 60th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered. Rest In Peace

Officer Ortiz,
On today, the 54th anniversary of your murder, I would like to say thank you for your service and sacrifice for the citizens of the state of New Mexico. There is no tougher job in Law Enforcement than that of a Corrections Officer.
