There are three types of people in this world: sheep, wolves, and sheepdogs. Some people prefer to believe that evil doesn't exist in the world and if it ever darkened their doorstep, they wouldn't know how to protect themselves. Those are the sheep. Then you've got predators, who use violence to prey on the weak. They're the wolves. And then there are those blessed with the gift of aggression, an overpowering need to protect the flock. These men are the rare breed who live to confront the wolf. They are the sheepdog. …You know who you are. You know your purpose.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 53rd anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Max, it's been 50 years this month since your passing. I'm feeling your absence quite strongly. You are not forgotten, my brother. I was only two years old when you were taken from us, and 16 years later became a police officer myself (not 26 years - a typo - in my earlier reflection.) I wish I'd had the opportunity and honor to get to know you as I was growing up, and to have you here to share the ensuing years. I hope you've found peace. You lived with honor.

Max was my brother, who I never got the opportunity to know, as he was killed when I was only 2 years old. I became a police officer in California 26 years after his death.
Max, you have not been forgotten and you are still in my memories. Thank you for your sacrifice.
