I love how our community of Grinnell continues to honor Officer Ogan all these years later. We’ve even named a stretch of road in town after him. RIP Officer Ogan and thank you for your service and sacrifice. Prayers to his family.

I was just getting my children up to get ready for school when I heard that an officer had been shot. I knew that my brother-in-law was on duty that night and immediately began praying for Lois and family. Shortly thereafter, they gave his name and I called my husband and told him; he came home and we left immediately for Grinnell and were stopped by officers who were checking vehicles similar to ours!

Today is the 50th anniversary of the incident. My great uncle, Ralph and his wife were held by the shooter in a farm house near Dubuque before they were arrested. They were unharmed. I widh the same was true for Officer Ogan.

The people of Grinnell continue to honor the memory of fallen Officer Ralph W. Ogan, who gave his life protecting them. He left behind his wife and three children.
The man who shot Officer Ogan was sentenced to life in prison without parole, Iowa's harshest sentence. That turned out to be ten years. He died of cancer 10 years to the day from when he murdered Officer Ogan. Interesting justice.

Grinnell is a small community and it goes to show you this type of tragedy can happen anywhere. God bless Mr. Ogan for his service and sacrafice to his community.
