Reflections for Trooper Daniel L. O'Brien

I am now in my 90th year and think of you every day. I eventually married a wonderful man,
and we had a very happy marriage. I told him all about you and he understood. He went with me when the pavilion was dedicated to your memory.

Trooper O’Brien,
On today, the 70th anniversary of your death I would just like to say thank you for your service and sacrifice-not just as a Law Enforcement Officer but for our Country as well when you served with the U.S. Army during the Korean War. And to your Family and loved ones, I wish to extend my deepest sympathy.

I turned 89 last Sunday and I still think of you every day. I often remember how we met. You stopped me on route 146 in North Smithfield and my mom was in the car - I was driving. She kept asking you why you had stopped me. You just said, "Just a minute ma'am." Later that week you called me and said, "This is Danny O'Brien." I said that I didn't know anyone by that name. You said that you were the trooper who stopped me. I asked you what had I done now? You said "Nothing. I just want to know if you'd go to the movies with me tomorrow night." I said that I would ask my dad. My dad thought about and said, "Well yes, I don't know how you could be any safer." that's how we began our romance. We were so in love almost from our first meeting!

I will be 89 in August of this year and look forward to seeing you in the afterlife when that day comes. You were 42 weeks short of becoming 26 years old and I had just turned 18.

He was my dads' cousin, I never knew him but heard about how he tried to save a woman during the hurricane.

Danny was the love of my life. We had planned to be married in April of 1955, then I would enter and complete my senior year at URI. We had absolutely NO warning that a hurricane was coming.

Name in 1954 was Meredith (Merry) Holt.

I read your epitaph with a lump in my throat. A brave man who held the same name as my son. I also note that you gave your life on the same day of the same month that my daughter Rachel died aged 21 (albeit 58 years later.) Your kind are needed in this world and this world is all the poorer for your departure. God bless. xxx

To fully appreciate the heroes of the present, we must recognize our heroes of the past. Your heroism and service is honored today, the 59th anniversary year of your death. I am priviliged to leave a tribute to you. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered. Rest In Peace.

Trooper O'Brien,

When I forget that there are still true heroes in the world I think of you and these other officers who are giving their all for people they do not know. Thank you for your bravery, service and giving me a hero. I am truly sorry that you family and fiance lost you. As a newlywed myself, I often think about losing my spouse as he goes off to work. I am sorry you two never got to celebrate your love. Thinking of you.

I remember Danny well. I was 14 when he was killed and hung out with his younger brother Bobby. Danny spent a lot of time with us guys on his days off. He was a great guy and influenced all of us buys in Lincoln Park. RIP Danny, I think of you often.
