Deputy Sheriff Robert Nicol was killed during a foot pursuit of a narcotics suspect across Route 1, just south of Route 405.

Deputy Nicol was struck by a Cadillac that had swerved to miss the suspect. He was transported to a local hospital where he died of his injuries less than two weeks later.
It was later determined that the man he was chasing was on probation for a manslaughter conviction in Ohio.
Deputy Nicol was a Vietnam War veteran. He had served with the Brevard County Sheriff's Office for 11 years and had previously served with the Ontario County Sherriff Office in Canadaigua, New York. He was survived by his daughter, two sons, and mother.
