Patrolman Edgar Nagie was shot and killed as he and his partner searched for a suspect who had threatened his wife with a gun approximately 30 minutes earlier.
The officers learned that the suspect was at a location on Washington Avenue. When they arrived at the scene at 10:30 p.m., Patrolman Nagie's partner covered the front of the home while Patrolman Nagie went to the back.
Patrolman Nagie encountered the suspect, and both immediately exchanged shots. Patrolman Nagie was struck three times and mortally wounded. The suspect had also been struck in the chest and died a short time later after being taken into custody by Patrolman Nagie's partner.
Patrolman Nagie had served with the Cleveland Division of Police for five years. He was survived by his expectant wife and two daughters.
