Patrolman David Moehler was shot and killed while responding to the sounds of gunfire at the intersection of Collinsville Avenue and Missouri Avenue.

A man had just murdered a business agent with whom he had been arguing about wages. The two had been arguing inside of the First National Bank of East St. Louis. After they took the argument outside the laborer shot the business agent.

As Patrolman Moehler ran to the scene the suspect shot him. Another responding officer shot and killed the suspect.

Patrolman Moehler had served with the East St. Louis Police Department for two years.
