Officer Harry Mereness succumbed to injuries sustained two days earlier when his motorcycle was struck while making a left turn onto Broadway Street.
His motorcycle collided with another vehicle that was also making a turn onto Galveston Road. Officer Mereness was thrown to the ground and received fatal injuries. The driver of the other car was charged with negligent homicide in juvenile court.
Officer Mereness had served with the Houston Police Department for four years. He was survived by his wife, two sons, mother, and sister.
