Constable Jerry McCrory was shot and killed while serving a disturbing the peace warrant on a 70-year-old man. He parked in front of the residence and started approaching the house. When he was approximately ten feet from the door the suspect suddenly opened it and fired at him with a 12 gauge shotgun, striking him in the chest. Other officers arriving on the scene were forced to shoot the suspect twice before taking him into custody. When released from the hospital a week later he was charged with capital murder.
On May 14, 1981, the suspect was convicted of murder and sentenced to life. He died in prison on March 4, 1988.
