Clem Long

Chief of Police Clem Long was shot and killed by a suspect who had earlier been warned about drunk and disorderly behavior and driving recklessly.

The suspect had brandished a pistol at Chief Long and had claimed he would not be arrested. Chief Long had opted to wait until the suspect had sobered before attempting an arrest, but the suspect shot Chief Long when he approached. Chief Long was taken to the Ohio Valley Hospital where he died two days later.

The suspect, a 36-year-old wealthy businessman, was tried and acquitted. Doctors testified he had an abscess on his head that affected his brain.

Chief Long was survived by his parents, grandmother, and aunt. He is buried at Lazear Chapel Cemetery in Kidwell, West Virginia.
