Herbert E. Locke

Chief Deputy Sheriff Herbert Locke was shot and killed while attempting to arrest a man during a domestic disturbance in Great Falls.

A woman had called the sheriff's office to report that her ex-husband was harassing her at her home on 6th Avenue South. Chief Deputy Locke and another deputy arrived at the home but the man had left. They learned that he was inside a service station at the intersection of 4th Street North and 1st Avenue North.

The man barricaded himself inside a bathroom at the service station. Chief Deputy Locke went to a window and started talking to the man. When Chief Deputy Locke instructed him to come out the man shot him through the window, killing him.

The man then shot and killed himself.

Chief Deputy Locke was survived by his wife, mother, four sisters, and one brother.
