Trooper Carl Lindberg was shot and killed while investigating a robbery at his apartment complex in Detroit while off duty.
Another tenant contacted him and told him there was a robbery in progress in the manager's office. One of the suspects shot him as they attempted to flee.
One suspect, 40, surrendered himself to Detroit Police 10 days later, and the other suspect, 53, was apprehended in Detroit on October 12, 1968. Both were sentenced to life on February 4, 1970. The oldest died in prison on February 16, 1983. The other suspect was denied parole on July 22, 2010.
Trooper Lindberg had served with the Michigan State Police for 15 months. He was survived by his wife and child.
