Sergeant Marvin Kline, Pilot Douglas Moonen, and Deputy Sheriff Ray Bockman were killed in an aircraft accident while on a training mission at 9:45 am.

They were practicing looking for drowning victims on the Kern River when the Cessna 206 hit a high-tension power line and tree before it crashed in Hart Memorial Park, six miles north of Bakersfield.

Sergeant Kline had served with the Kern County Sheriff's Office for 18 years. He was survived by his wife, two daughters, a son, and a stepdaughter.

Today, on your 85th birthday, we would be barbecuing tri-tip, your favorite, drinking Coors, your favorite, on your beautiful patio you built, on this wonderful fall day celebrating just like we always did.
Instead, tears filled with memories, and your death due to the fact people wanted to play a joke on the Sergeant and scare you about flying with a man you protested about getting in the plane with, Doug Moonen. Upon landing, give you a gold wing pin. The giver, Carl Sparks. I was there. I know.
