Correctional Officer D'Antonio Washington died the day after being attacked by a prisoner at USP Atlanta in Atlanta, Georgia.
He was making his rounds in the maximum security unit when an inmate snuck up behind him and struck him on the head three times with a ball peen hammer. Officer Washington was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital where he was removed from life support the following day.
The prisoner was sentenced to death as a result of Officer Washington's murder.

The inmate borrowed the hammer from the inmate plumber and caught the Officer from behind under the 1st TV on the wall in the left side or north side of the unit. The inmate’s last name was Battle, He was in Federal Prison for killing his wife who was in the Marine Corps at the time of her Murder.
