Officer Steve Pollard was killed when he was struck by a vehicle after pulling over a suspected drunk driver on Route 60.
During the encounter Officer Pollard had a Motor Officer respond to conduct an in depth DUI investigation of the driver he had stopped. While the investigation was taking place, Officer Pollard returned to the drivers side door area of his patrol vehicle where he was struck and killed by a passing motorist.
The motorist who struck him failed to stop at the scene but was located a short distance away by another officer. Later during a trial, the motorist claimed to have dozed off while driving and was unaware of what exactly he had struck.
Officer Pollard had served with the Mesa Police Department for 1-1/2 years and is survived by his wife and daughter.

I went to the academy with Stevie. His badge # was: 10149, my badge # was: 10150. We were both former Corrections Officers before Mesa PD.
My career path took me away from Mesa PD up to a small PD in the White Mountains.
I returned for Stevie's funeral representing my department. I'll never forget the Burger King workers standing on the side of the road with their hands over their hearts and heads bowed as the very long procession of law enforcement vehicles passed by.
Stevie was kind, considerate and easy to talk to- maybe because we had had a lot in common, but I think he was just that way with everybody.
I left Law Enforcement over 15 years ago but I often recall previous friends and colleagues and Stevie was a good one.
